A WEEK IN METALSMITHING

I loved my daughter's layered metal cross pendant (previous post) so much that I decided to make more for my Artfire store. In my search for patterns that I thought would look good cut into metal, I found a "fire/flame" pattern that I loved. I like the way the flames bend and curve and come out looking somewhat like a hand. I tried different textures on the crosses and went with something simple on the flames to give them added interest. I also played with different types of bales to see what worked for me and was visibly pleasing. I think they all work and would appeal to your personal style. I used copper and sterling silver filled sheet to complete the projects. Argentium silver is used for one of the bails. I plan to add chain or leather cord to complete them.

Everything didn't go smoothly and I had some re-dos, but overall, I was pretty happy with what I accomplished on my own. Next - I am thinking of a wire heart I'd like to try. Maybe today!

A MOTHER DAUGHTER METALSMITH CLASS

Well, my classes in metalsmithing are long over and I had to take the push to do some things on my own, without the guidance of my teacher, Jolan. My first step in that direction was the ring for my friend, Jeanne. Then my daughter got me started again because she wanted a layered metal pendant... and she wanted me to teach her! I was very intimidated, because I don't feel I am ready to teach anyone something I only just learned myself. But I pushed onward and it was a great bonding time for mother and daughter. She is already creative by nature and a quick learner. So I had her come up with a design and showed her how to use a saw. What a trooper she was - she cut out her design, breaking only one blade. My first time sawing was awful, sawing lots of "wood" on the block and I know I went through more than one blade. So now I am feeling a bit more intimidated, but VERY proud of my daughter. Here is her finished pendant.

We then went to work on her cross pendant, cleaning, filing, sweat soldering, more cleaning and filing, and voila! A beautiful pendant. Being the perfectionist that she is, she was not happy that the cross was not perfectly square on the backing, but I told her that is often the nature of handmade - it does not have to be perfect! The only thing she did not have a hand in was the soldering, but that will change with the next project - her own layered ring. She has already cut out her pieces to go on top of the band. She created her own pattern using texturing scissors, cutting out pattern on heavy paper. She traced it onto onion skin paper which was glued onto the metal for sawing. She did a great job sawing out the pattern. We are awaiting more metal sheet so we can finish up the ring. I will post a picture when it's completed. A New Ring for an Old Friend

And that is not to say that she is old, but that we have been friends now for about 30 years! My friend, Jeanne, got me on my way to creating jewelry about eight years ago! I have gone from beading to chainmaille, wire wrapping, and now metalsmithing. As you read in my previous posts, I learned to sweat solder a band ring and Jeanne liked it so much, she asked me to create one for her. It is made with nickle silver and a copper overlay. I made a soft curve in the copper and added texture with the diamond head of my interchangeable head texturing hammer (a great little tool!). The metals were sweat soldered together with cleaning, filing and sanding as needed between steps. The only problem I ran into was in the sizing...I need to get that process down! But it was easily remedied by leaving the back of the band open. I am very proud of the end result! My next project is a pendant I am working on using copper and sterling silver filled materials. More later. In the meantime, here is a picture of Jeanne's ring!

Week Nine/Ten at the Appalachian Rock Shop

I can't believe we have come to the end of our ten-week silversmithing class. It has been a wonderful adventure. Our instructor, Jolan Naleppa, was always very thorough in instructing us not only in procedure, but also in safety working with the various tools on hand at the shop. The shop owner, Leslie Metarko, and her staff was always very helpful and eager to assist with our needs. The Appalachian Rock Shop has so much to offer - from fossils and rocks to beautifully hand-crafted jewelry. If you are from the Youngstown/Pittsburgh area, it's a must-see! And if, like me, you want to pursue the art of making jewelry, I highly recommend their classes.

At our final two classes, we continued our work on our bezel set ring. We soldered the silver pieces together, filed, polished, buffed, cleaned, and finally, set our stones in the bezel. We carefully hammered the bezel using the bezel pusher and ball portion of the hammer, bringing the bezel snug to the stone. I used a burnishing tool to smooth the bezel further. The last step was to give it a final polish. This is the final result.

My thanks also to Phyllis Riegle, Riegle Design, who created the beautiful stone I used in this ring. Phyllis was also a member of our class, along with many other wonderful and accomplished women who are always continuing to learn and grow in their art of creating jewelry. Because class members are all at different levels in silversmithing, it was great fun to see what they were working on!

METALSMITHING - WEEK 8 WITH JO AT THE APPALACHIAN ROCK SHOP

We are getting down to the wire now with one project left and two weeks to complete it! I was excited to have completed the layered metal ring this week! We hammered it into a C-shape on the ring mandrel, using a leather mallet. Then, using the pliers, we then the ends together and held the ring up to the light looking for gaps. For a good solder, we needed the ends to be flush. Some additional filing was completed and the piece was made ready for soldering. The ring was fluxed and pinned to the fire brick seam side up. The solder was a success, the piece cleaned, sanded and polished! And this is the final result. For my first ring, I think it came out pretty well! I actually had someone ask me to make them one just like it! What a great compliment! I know I still have so much to learn to refine the skills I am learning, but it's going to be a wonderful adventure! Here is a picture of the ring!

Our next and last project - a bezel set ring - I picked out my stone, an oval agate (cut and polished by one of the other students here). I am in love with this beautiful stone and the lovely earthtones creating a beautiful piece of art! Our instructor, Jo, went over the fundamentals of choosing bezel wire, sizing it around the stone, marking and cutting. Following her lead, this was accomplished and the bezel was readied for soldering. There was a small amount of overlap, so some filing was done to make sure the bezel would sit flush to the back plate for the next soldering step. This was all we had time for today - but we accomplished a lot in our three hours! Here are photos of the stone and bezel and the back plate we will be using in the next step! Week Six/Seven - Metalsmithing

I lost a week of class due to illness, but was back yesterday to continue working on my layered copper and silver ring. I was able to make up some of the lost time yesterday and got quite a bit accomplished. Previously, I had cut out the design in the copper layer of my band ring and had done some of the filing and smoothing at home. Yesterday I continued that process. The ring was wider than I wanted, so I sawed both pieces to the desired width and continued filing and sanding the edges. The pieces were placed in the pickle and scrubbed with soap and water with a brush. After a coating of flux, the solder was placed on the back of the copper piece and the first step of the sweat soldering was completed. Back to the pickle and cleaning. The pieces were fluxed and fit together on the fire brick. We put some antiflux on the T-pins so the piece could be pinned/secured to the firebrick. The antiflux was to prevent the pins from being soldered to the ring during the firing process. The solder flowed and the piece was quenched in water and put back into the pickle for cleaning. After cleaning, we were back to the filing and sanding process. Each end of the ring needed to be filed straight for a flush fit in the next step. I sanded the piece with various grits to clean off the scratches and excess solder. Flux was added to the piece and it was fired to anneal the band for the next step! Week seven will hopefully complete the ring! I can't wait. Hope it fits! Our last project will be a bezel set ring!

Hammering and Forming Instructional Videos

I recently got a notification in my mailbox regarding two new metalsmithing videos. Since I am taking a metalsmithing class, it peaked my interest and I indulged myself and purchased Metalsmith Essentials: Basic Jewelry Hammering and Forming with Bill Fretz. Bill Fretz is well known for his complete lines of jewelers stakes and hammers. I also purchased Metalsmith Essentials: Hammering and Forming Jewelry, Vol. 2 with Bill Fretz. Since I am new to this area of jewelry design, I can only offer my best opinion of these videos without something to compare them to. I thought the videos were well coordinated, starting with the simplest of designs and working up to four or five others, all cuff bracelets, but each a little different. Of course, it showed the uses of all of the Fretz tools, but he took his time and went through all the relevant information required to complete one of his projects. He showed his use of filing and soldering techniques. I found both videos very interesting and a valuable resource for future reference. I highly recommend them! He's a great teacher and shows you up close what each tool is capable of helping you create. I will add a link where you can purchase them!

Week Five - Metal/Silver Smithing Classes

Following one week off from classes, the group met for Week Five! I can't believe we are half way through already! It was a morning split between our first project, the layered pendant, and project two, a layered ring. Having already done most of the sanding, we went on to adding some patina to highlight the dents and lines. I did not want a mirror finish on either side, so that eliminated having to take the pendant to the polisher. I personally prefer a more satiny finish, especially on this yin and yang pendant. Our instructor, Jo, gave me a bottle of brown/black blackening agent and a paint brush and told me to paint it where I wanted it to darken the pendant. Having only used liver of sulfur, this patina was a new experience....and I probably add "just a little" too much But never fear, we were able to clean it up with a brass type Brillo pad...excuse my lack of proper terminology! But this is the final result. I plan to add a double leather cord to it and wear it to my next class.

On to the next project - a layered ring with design and metals of choice. I decided to go with the same metal contrasts I used in the pendant - copper and silver. Having traced out my design, I set about preparing my piece for sawing. Now, sawing is still not my strong suit, but I am less intimidated by it and overall, I don't think I did too badly. I will let you be the judge. I completed the sawing and did a little clean up. This is the result. I will probably have to do some more filing and will probably lessen the width of the bands. Metalsmithing - Week 4

As you know from my previous posts, I am taking my metalsmithing class at the Appalachian Rock Shop in Harmony, PA. Well, before I go any further, you must check out their new web site! It's beautiful! There is something for everyone: the mineral and fossil collector, casual and/or metalphysical rock enthusiast, jewelry collector, artist, children and educators! Back to my classes. Today we continued working on the bail for my pendant. I decided to add some texture to the bail so I took a ballpeen hammer and added some ball-like indentations. Of course, this hardened the metal, so, once again, we had to go through the annealing process. We then continued the process of shaping the bail so that it would fit snugly onto the pendant - pinch, squeeze, hammer - it's a process! After fluxing the entire piece, front and back, it was secured to the firing block. In this step, we used medium solder and small pieces were placed around and within the bail and it was fired, quenched and placed in the pickle for cleaning. Now for the hard stuff - the sanding begins. I went to the bench pin and began this process. Whoops - a little error here - not realizing, I turned the piece over to do some sanding on the back side without protecting what I did on the front - nothing major, but in doing this, the front got scratched from the bench pin that I was using to stablize the metal while I worked. Before turning it, I should have protected what was already done by covering it with masking tape! That was today's biggest lesson for me!! By this time, three hours had gone by and it was time to shut down for some festivities! The shop celebrated three birthdays today and we had pot luck - cheese, crackers, chicken croissants, jambalya, ambrosia fruit salad, cake, cheese cake, cookies, artichoke dip - these gals KNOW HOW TO PARTY! It was great fun.

Metalsmithing - Week Three - Creating the bail...

Today we soldered all the pieces of my Ying and Yang pendant. I had to place the piece on the fire brick, set the copper pieces onto the nickle silver round where I wanted them and pin them into place. Pinning the pieces is done with pieces of wire and T-pins to keep the pieces from moving while they are being torched. With assistance from Jo, the pieces were easily soldered, quenched in water, and placed in the pickle for about 10 minutes for cleaning.

Next we set about creating a bail. I did several tracings on paper, cut them out, and folded them in half in the form of a bail to try different sizes against the focal piece. Once I found the tracing of choice, it was traced on tracing paper and wrapped around the nickle silver (set with glue stick) and I was off to the bench pin to saw out another piece of metal. I did get a few scratches on the metal and broke, not just one, but three saw blades getting the job done! However, the final cut piece came out well. Using grits 240, 400, and 600, in that order, I sanded out the scratches. The bail was torched to soften the metal so the bail could be formed. Out of time today, so until next week, here is a picture of the focal piece and the half-formed bail. I think the next step will be to solder the bail to the focal. I plan on hammering the bail and one of the pieces on the focal, so we'll see which step will be next! Until next week, here is a picture of what we have up to now. See you next week! Vintage Crystals - Re-Created!

I did a home show about a year ago and one of the guests brought me these beautiful vintage crystal beads. She had been saving them for her daughter's wedding, but the daughter was not interested in crystal. They are approximately 10mm and pick up all the colors of the rainbow. I made bracelets, earrings, and a necklace, all in gold tones. The wire connections are hand made from jeweler's bronze. I still have enough beads left to do more in silver accents...sterling would be beautiful! For now, here is the crystal and bronze. Blessings to all! Anita

SILVERSMITHING CLASSES

I've not posted for a while, but have been busy this summer creating and doing some local art shows. While at an ArtieGras show in Sharon, PA, at Quaker Steak and Lube, I met a lovely gentleman and his daughter who told me about the Appalachian Rock Shop & Jewelry Emporium in Harmony, PA and the various classess they offer. My friend, Jeanne, and I took a ride out there to check it out! What a wonderful shop with beautiful rock specimens, beads, findings, beading tools, and hand crafted jewelry! Owner, Leslie, was very helpful in getting me set up in the fall silversmithing class with instructor, Jolan Naleppa. My first class was two weeks ago. Jolan gave us an overview of the upcoming classes and what we would be learning. She demonstrated the various tools in the shop and how they are used. Printed hand-outs were distributed, one with the fundamentals of soldering and the other about the projects we would be doing.

Yesterday was the first hands-on class. The project - a soldered pendant using two pieces of metal that would be sweat soldered. We had to pick out a design that would be cut into one piece of metal with a jeweler's saw. After sawing out the design, we learned to clean up the edges of the metal with various filing tools. The piece was then cleaned in pickle (an acid bath) and prepared for sweat soldering, covering the entire piece with flux and then strategically placing solder on the back of the pieces. Jolan assisted with melting the solder. The pieces were put back into the pickle for cleaning. These are the pictures I took this a.m. showing the nickel silver and copper I chose for the pendant, the design cuts, and the melted solder. Next - we have to reheat the solder to fuse the metals together, add a bail or pin closure, and learn the process of cleaning and polishing.

More next week. There are eight more classes to go and two or three more projects.

CREATIONS IN JEWELER'S BRONZE

This week I have been doing more wire pieces in Jeweler's Bronze wire. With real gold being so expensive nowadays, and for that matter, sterling silver, the jeweler's bronze is a nice, affordable alternative in creating custom wire jewelry. Jeweler's bronze wire is a form of brass. However, there is a difference in the metal mix that gives it its beautiful gold tone. In time it will develop a patina. Like sterling silver, keep it in a zip lock bag to delay the patina. The first set pictured is a combination of free formed wire coils/swirls with Byzantine links. The ear wires are bronze colored nickle and lead safe lever backs.

This second set is a hammered flat coil "8" connected with jump rings (an Sharilyn Miller design). A hand-crafted toggle is used for closure. I used two figure "8" coils attached with small jump rings to create the earrings. They measure 2 1/2" long from the top of the ear wire. The bracelet is a generous 1" in width. I used 14 gauge wire for the hammered pieces, so it has a nice chunky look, in keeping with today's current jewelry trends.

Copper and Silver Love Bracelet

I watched a performance of "Stand Up" by Sugarland recently and during the performance saw banners with "Love" spelled out with the o as a peace sign. I thought it would make a great piece of jewelry. And so began my journey in metal work. I've done a few small things in metal, but this was a challenge to me - especially my limited soldering skills. Two of the pieces were done 3-4 times before I finally got it right...my solders were not taking on the peace sign or the "L". I think the crux of the problem was that these two pieces were not fitting properly to the copper before firing. I persevered and used a leather hammer to get the fit as close as possible at diffent points. Finally, sweet success. If you are considering metal work/soldering, be patient, read up on the technique you plan to use or take a class and learn from someone more experienced. Most importantly, don't be deterred. Chainmaille & Leather

Today I started out making chainmaille earrings. I was not happy with the end result, so decided on a box link chainmaille bracelet. I needed to make additional jumprings, but found I was out of the rose gold 18 gauge Parawire. Well, I was determined to continue one way or another - the Taurus in me :), and I let my imagination go. I added some accent beads and some brown leather cord and this was the result. You never know what can be created that's new or exciting. I'm sure someone has done this before me, but this is where my imagination took me. Chainmaille Bracelet in Rose Gold

Like the Byzantine I posted earler, this chainmaille bracelet was also created with Rose Gold Parawire. Again, Parawire is permanently colored copper wire. Being made with 18 gauge wire and smaller jump rings, this is great for the lady who prefers a more delicate look in her jewelry. It has a hook closure with extra links for sizing. Byzantine Bracelet in Rose Gold

Created today, a Byzantine link bracelet done in Rose Gold Parawire. CBC Metal/Parawire has a whole line of permanently colored copper wire in many gauges and colors to pick from. You can let your imagination flow with ideas to incorporate their wire into your designs. With the cost of silver skyrocketing, Parawire offers a cost effective way for you to create. There are other alternatives in colored wire and this is one of many.

More Viking Knit!

I decided on a necklace for this weave and went for an asymmetrical look, using hand made lampwork by Jeanne and fancy copper beads. The chain was also hand crafted with a lobster claw closure. Patina was added; the necklace was tumbled and voila! Hope you like it! I am still in the beginning stages of discovering the versitility of the viking knit weave. Creating jewelry is always an adventure!

Viking Knit Jewelry

My daughters got me a Lazee Daizee Viking Knit Wire Weaving Tool Kit for my birthday in May. Having returned from vacation, I had the opportunity to give it a try. I have started out with 26 ga copper wire for my first few pieces. The tool was easy to use, the instructions easy to follow, and after doing the first three, my weaving got more consistent and even. These are two of the bracelets I completed! I am using my large hole lampwork beads created by my friend, Jeanne and VOILA! I am very pleased with the results and looking forward to trying some in bronze and argentium silver. I added patina and placed them in my tumbler for hardening and polishing. SOMETHING NEW IN TURQUOISE

I recently completed this turquoise set in argentium sterling silver. I wanted to create something a little different (for me)! It is not exactly what I originally had in mind, but that's fine - all creations start with an "idea" and develop on as we go! I torched the ends of my wires to create the ball ends, slid on the beautiful turquoise beads. The wires were looped and twisted and set onto a crafted sterling silver neck wire, each wire piece separated by sterling silver beads. The wire pieces were tumbled for hardness, and the neck wire was hammered for hardness. The necklace would have to be stored on a flat surface in an area where it would be protected from damage by other items that could mar or bend the rounded shape of the neck wire. The coordinating earrings are also created with argentium sterling silver with hand made ear wires. These items have all been listed in my Artfire store! Blessings, Anita

PRECIOUS METAL CLAY PEACE SIGN PENDANT

Knowing my daughter's artistic abilities, I recently asked her to carve a peace sign into molding clay for me so I could use it to make pendants in metal clay for my jewelry shows. I am so proud of her and the design she came up with. It's unique and measures about 1" in diameter as pictured here in the silver metal clay. She made this piece herself with the exception of the patina and cord...those were done by "mom." We were both very proud of the end result. This brings me to another thought - we should never quit challenging ourselves to try something new, whatever our age. I found the rewards of creating jewelry in my retirement years and it has given me great joy and a sense of accomplishment. I hope my daughter continues to be interested in challenging herself artistically, whether it's in jewelry or some other art form. It's a great outlet after busy schedule of parenting and working. She has also been doing some chainmaille....perhaps we have another jewelry artist rising through the ranks! Challenge yourself - TODAY!

Egyptian Coil Necklace

Completed this a.m., this Egyptian coil necklace is created in jeweler's bronze wire and embellished with a beautiful multicolored Fenicio Flat Oval Venetian glass bead, purchased from http://venetianbeadshop.com/. The bead is wire wrapped in jeweler's bronze square wire. There is a rainbow of colors in the bead including blue, green, orange, red, and a sparkling gold leafy vine interspersed. NEW IN MARCH!

I have been attempting to learn the basketweave wire wrap and after tearing several wraps apart and starting over, I am reasonably happy that I am starting to get some good results with this technique. These are some cabs I completed for a friend and for myself. FYI - if you are learning a new techniuque, don't get discouraged - just practice, practice, practice. It does get better!!

These are brand new pics of Sid and Mr. Misty! Mr. Misty is one year old this spring and I believe Sid is about 14. Sid tolerates Mr. Misty, but sometimes I catch them playing hide and seek. Mr. Misty was assisting me at my jewelry table as I posted lots of new items on Artfire! Hope you enjoy the pics. I guess I should also report that our pooch Lilly is also doing well and loves to play with Misty. They are like two blurs as they run around the house! Ahhh, all is well in pet land! :)

I just returned from a wonderful long weekend with friends - friends for almost 60 years!
And, we all turn 65 years old this year. Three friends from Ohio and one friend in Nevada converged on our life-long friend in Long Beach, CA. It was a celebration of friendship, of life and of love. We laughed, we cried, and we celebrated! Two evenings we went to dinner in pink wigs with a matching pink boa! What a hoot! We had giggles and smirks and whistles and everyone wanted to know what we were celebrating! It was a blast. We shopped til we dropped and of course, I had to visit a local bead store - so Patti took us to Ruby to "Ruby Tuesday" on 7th St. (I think) in Long Beach. What a wonderful store. Lots of beads, findings, and IDEAS! I really wanted some of their Red Creek Jasper, but it just wasn't in the budget this trip. But, the owner and her assistant were very helpful. Because this was such a special occasion, I wanted to give all the girls a gift that reflected all that our friendship. After much contemplation, I decided to look for a "symbol of friendship" via the Internet. What I found was the "kanji" symbol for friendship! It was perfect! I found my sterling silver wire and measured, cut, hammered, and soldered the symbol. I cleaned it up and smoothed the edges and added patina. Into the tumbler it went for hardening. I hung the pieces on two strands of leather cord. The girls LOVED the pieces and all they represented. I included a card with a picture of the symbol and an explanation, along with my best wishes and love.

We got home yesterday and are still talking about our wonderful celebration of friendship and love!

NEW IN FEBRUARY!

Winter certainly has given us a run for our money this year! I am soooooo ready to break into Spring! But in the interim, I have been making more chainmaille, some in argentium s.s., as well as doing some wire wrapping. I am selling on consignment at two shops locally, MAE Spa, Hartford, OH and Dan - Gallery & Gift Store, Sharpsville, PA! Very excited to have these two new venues. I am also doing an show at the B&O Microbrewery, Youngstown, OH, on Feb. 12 from Noon to 7 p.m. - an afternoon of art, music, and local brew! NEW BRACELETS FOR JANUARY!

I had a special order for a bracelet and being me, I made four so she would have a choice. It was to be a gift and not knowing the recipient's taste in jewelry, I was compelled to offer my client a choice! Two are done in 18 gauge jeweler's bronze wire and the other two are strung on beading wire. Each a little different, but each with a little glitz added for glamour! The stones used were jasper, aventurine, and fossil coral, along with a splash of silver and gold glass beads and Czech crystal beads for the glitz! My client picked the copper and jasper with the copper colored floral toggle. The rest will be priced for sale.

A childhood friend brought this beautiful pale green stone donut to me and asked me to wire wrap it for her. I tried three different wraps before deciding to do a free form wrap. She chose the jeweler's bronze wire, and since her birth stone and favorite color is amethyst, I incorporated some beautiful genuine amethyst round beads and a light amethyst crystal accent. She told me to "go crazy", so I did! I would love to hear what you think of this piece! Should I have left the donut with just the wire or are the additional beads a plus in the design?

I have added a new category to my jewelry line - lanyards. I made several pieces for a show I did recently at a local hospital. Today I added them to my Artfire site. I made them in several colors and all with magnetic closures for safety. The metal components on most of them can be removed so the lanyard can be converted to a necklace! They are dressy enough to be worn for work or out for the evening. I think this is a big plus! Hope you like them! Happy Holidays! Anita

PEACE SIGN JEWELRY

I was asked to make a peace sign bracelet for my friend's granddaughter and being a grandma myself, was in a quandary as to what an 11 year old might like. I forged ahead and decided to create a peace sign from argentium sterling silver. It was a fun experience as I had never soldered argentium before and I read that it doesn't require solder, but rather joins itself - which it did! I used 16 gauge wire, cut the cross pieces and hammered the ends, and proceeded to solder them together. I hammered the finished piece, added a light patina and into the tumbler it went! I was happy with the end result, but decided it might be a bit too large for her age. So, I went ahead and put it on cord and attached a small "believe" charm. Who doesn't believe in the possibility of peace! Here is the result.

Undaunted, I continued in pursuit of the right bracelet style. I came across some blue lapis beads and thought they would look great with jeans - teens - jeans! And so and I started stringing and decided to finish off the bracelet ends with black seed beads in lieu of cord. While going through my "stash" I came across some precious metal clay pieces I had made with the peace sign stamped in. I incorporated it as an accent. I am actually happy with the end result, but my friend did specifically mention leather cord as part of the creation.

Last week, while out shopping, I came across some peace sign charms and purchased one, just in case I needed another avenue in my pursuit. I incorporated the leather cord, the peace sign, some silver plated tube beads, and added the charms: Believe, Love, and Laugh. Inspiration for daily living. And voila! Yet another peace sign bracelet.

I created this necklace yesterday with a combination of jasper, pearls, Czech glass beads, and copper. The jasper focal is wire wrapped in copper, and the closure is hand made in copper. This too will go to the art show on Sunday. The coordinating earrings are done with the Czech glass and pearls on lever back nickel free ear wires.

I recently went bead shopping in Middlefield, OH at Country Art & Jewelry and found some lovely metal floral components. I bought three sets and this is the first set I have worked on. With Fall in the air, it seemed the best place to start. I purchased some Swarovski crystals to match the crystal in the components, but didn't care for the crystals alone. I spent many hours on this bracelet and although I think it looks nice, it does not "wear" on the arm very well. It's too floppy and and just hangs in a clump....so I am asking for YOUR FEEDBACK please. My original idea was nothing like the end result, and it evolved as I created. I really want your honest opinion on a way to improve the design! I've thought about adding a wire bar across and through the links about 1" apart. And I've thought about taking it all apart and making separate bracelets. Another idea was to take off each band of links and weave them together, incorporating the beads down the middle. Then I would be eliminating the starting bars at each completely and would have to come up with an alternative. I am a muddle of thoughts! (did I just make up a word - muddle?) AFTER FIRING THE BRONZE

These are the bronze metal clay pieces after firing, clean-up and the tumbler. There is one little stray that I missed and I have it pictured with its twin so you can see what lit looks like right after firing and then after the cleanup/tumble process. Overall, I am happy with the results. I think my owl needs a bit more patina to show off his eyes and feathers. It's not real obvious what you are looking at on the coral impressions, but I think with some little pearls to accent it would be lovely on a chain or cord! I must let my imagination wander...Each motorcycle pendant comes out a little different, depending on the amount of clay I leave on the piece. And, the bamboo I love! I think the pieces will be great in a bracelet with some pretty bead accents. Also really like the vine pieces. I guess you will see these pieces again over time as I incorporate them into my jewelry. I am still a PMC novice, but learning as I go along! Please leave comments, good, bad, or educational! OPEN ROUND CHAIN MAILLE BRACELET

I got my July issue of Art Jewelry and among other wonderful articles, was a pattern for an open round chain maille bracelet. Since I've only done two chain maille bracelets and this was described as a "beginner" project, it was just the right project for me! The most difficult part of this project was getting it started...they suggested using a mandrel and I came up with a straw, taped my three starting links and continued to add links until it was the right length. I added extra links to taper the ends and added a toggle that I crafted myself - something else I'd not done before, but I like it. I've always found chain maille rather intimidating, but these two recent bracelets have definitely given me courage! BOX PATTERN CHAIMAILLE BRACELET IN COPPER

Today's project was another box chain maille bracelet. I used smaller jump rings (4.5), 18 gauge. It's a nice heavy chain for a man or a woman. My hat's off to all chain maille artists who do this all the time. It is a very challenging art form, but worth every minute when you see the finished product. I am in almost done with this necklace....I need to add some links, a hook, and a cab - this was as special order and we have not decided on a focal yet...but I have put a couple of focals against the necklace. I created the bronze flower last week with bronze PMC. It has been patina'd, so is a little darker. The stone cab is a beautiful carnelian stone with reddish orange hues. As promised, here are the pictures of my latest adventure in bronze PMC. Two matching leaves - earrings; a daisy, an owl, and a heart- large enough for a pendant; a small leaf - a great embellishment; a pansey - also an embellishment. The one piece I am excited about is a motorcycle pendant. I recently had someone ask me if I make biker jewelry. I didn't, but decided to see what I could come up with. My friend Jeanne (aka gammiebrat) and her husband have a collection of motorcycle memorabilia and I asked if they had something small enough to make a mold for a pendant. We found a small bike and with Jeanne's help and her molding clay, came up with an impression. We were very excited that it came out so well. I will say that I think the piece looks better in person. If you know of someone who might like one of these on a leather cord, refer them to me!!

A FAMILY KEEPSAKE BRACELET

This birthstone bracelet was a special order for a friend who wanted a keepsake to honor her parents and grandparents. We decided on Swarovski crystal with sterling silver components/accents. I took her small stature into consideration and didn't want something too overwhelming, but dainty and feminine. I e-mailed these pics to her today as she is out of the country right now. BEADING IN JULY!

Today I finished up three necklaces. The first is a rainbow of mauve, blue, and green in a multi-strand necklace, created with seed beads, tube beads, and more of Jeanne's lamp work beads set as the focal point of the necklace. I love this piece - great for summer. The second piece is also in mauves with stone chips and polished stone focals. A heavier chunky look, great for the individual who likes the look of natural stone. Great for summer or fall, I think. And lastly, everyone likes a simple black necklace - this one is done with sterling silver accents and a simply wrapped black focal bead. Which look appeals to you? CREATING FOR THE LITTLE DIVA!

Hi, everyone. I have some new things to show today! I have added three necklaces to my "Little Diva" line for the little ones in our lives. All were created with seed beads and a simple focal. Two were embellished with lampwork beads, created by my friend Jeanne. The third piece was embellished with pink and white floral porcelain beads.

A CREATION IN BLACK ONYX

Another new piece I completed today was created for a friend who wanted something in black onyx! She saw one I did earlier for my cousin and requested something similar. It is accented in sterling silver with hematite chips and measures approximately 17" in length. She hasn't seen it yet, but I hope it's what she wanted.

BOX CHAINMAILLE BRACELET

I recently did a two-day art show (Blues Fest) with the Artists of the Rustbelt at the B&O (a microbrewery) in Youngstown, OH. It was great fun with great music and I met a lot of interesting people. Among them was author,
Sam Moffie (http://www.samsstories.com). Sam was seated at the table next to me, graciously autographing his novels. I purchased two of his books, "The Book of Eli" and "The Organ Grinder and the Monkey." Sam autographed his books for me and we exchanged business cards. Sam expressed some interest in a man's bracelet and asked me if I made men's jewelry. I hadn't, but told him I'd give it a try and email him pics when it was done. And so began my quest for a men's bracelet design. I searched the Internet for a chainmaille design that I thought would be something he would like, and a good starting point for me. I found several free designs at http://www.chainweavers.com/. I printed off the ones of interest to me and decided to tackle a box weave. After a few attempts, I finally "got it" and this is the end result. It's done in copper, 18 gauge wire, and measures about 7-1/2 to 8" in length. I added patina and put it in my tumbler for about 1 hour for hardening. I went over it with some a Brillo to remove a bit of the patina. In time, with wear, more of the natural copper hues will show through.

The end result was that Sam "loved" the bracelet! What a joy when someone loves what you have created. And so, my thanks to Sam for the order and for the challenge of trying something new, and to Chainweavers for the free pattern! I hope you like it, too. I think I'll be making more of these!

Bracelet in Bronze and Quartz

This is today's creation, made from Vintaj bronze Parawire and embellished with quartz and Czech fire polished amber beads. I really enjoy creating a project from scratch. The Parawire is certainly a great alternative from the more expensive sterling and gold filled, and just as classy. And you don't have to worry about tarnish. I made some earrings with the quartz, but trying to decide on ear wires for them.

I found and recently ordered some tin/bronze wire online and awaiting the order. I am anxious to see how the wire is to work with. Parawire is coated copper wire and pretty easy to work with. MAY PROJECTS

So far this month, I have worked with wire, done some basic beading, and created some PMC Bronze pieces with my friend, Jeanne. It's been a while since I've done a project just stringing beads, but this month I did a lovely necklace in a shell theme with a fossil coral focal. I really liked it with one strand for the necklace, but since chunky is in, I decided to double strand it.

For the wire project, I had started coiling some wire one day into links and thought I could work it into a bracelet. My friend called it an "original", but there are so many wire workers out there that I can't believe someone hasn't thought of this design before, so I hesitate to call it my original. But keeping with my shell theme, I added small coin/disc shell beads to it and thought it came out well. The wire is Vintag by Parawire and the toggle is a gold tone that I thought blended well.

And lastly, Jeanne and I once again attempted our work with Bronze PMC. I love the bronze and it seems to fit right in with the colors I like, and the patina giving it a rich antique look. We had very good luck with the kiln this time and the settings for firing have been saved for the next time. I cleaned up my pieces with a brass wire brush, tumbled them, and then added some patina. I tumbled them for another half hour and this is the result. I want to clean them up some more and maybe do some burnishing, then will decide what I want to create with them. I especially love the large one in the center - my lovely lady with the flowing hair. She didn't come out the last time, but she fared very well this time.

NEW BOOKS TO CONSIDER:
To help in educating myself in PMC techniques, I have purchased two books, both which I found informative and well written: The Art of Metal Clay by Sherri Haab and New Directions in Metal Clay by CeCe Wire.

Another book I purchased was Contemporary Copper Jewelry by Sharilyn Miller, a great book for you wire workers. I loved the projects in this book and the directions and photos seem easy to follow.

BRONZE PMC - OUR FIRST PROJECT

This week Jeanne & I worked with bronze precious metal clay. While it was easy to work with and form in the molds, firing offered some challenges. Some of the pieces actually disintegrated and disappeared - never to be found, some were soft in the middle, and others came out fine. We used the instructions on the pac...kage for the 1st firing. After the problems, Jeanne did some more research and made changes to the firing schedule, but there were still issues in the final results. These are some of the pieces I did that turned out well. One of the pieces I did was a free form attempt at flowers, hearts, and Love in pendant form. I am generally not artistic this way, but the end result isn't bad for a first attempt. The other two pieces were done using molds we had created from buttons. I really like them a lot, and would like to learn more about cleaning, polishing, and refining the pieces. They were patinated in liver of sulfer. If you have any advise, I'm open! Please comment! I'd love to hear from you.

April's Creations

I did some pieces using shell disc beads in a lovely sand color. I was hoping to get back to beaded pieces, rather than wire wapped, and ended up with some of both. I made the wire focal piece when I was at my daughters enjoying our new granddaughter, Abbey, but wasn't sure what I was going to do with it. This was the end result. I completed it with matching earrings and a bracelet. I used the remaining beads to make a beaded necklace, in combination with some small beads with light and dark beige hues. I thought they complimented the discs. Thanks for looking.

NEW CREATIONS IN COPPER/TRAVELING WITH WIRE

I finished these copper pieces this week. All of the wire work is completely handmade, and the beautiful lampwork bead swirled with colors is by my friend, Jeanne.

I did some of the wirework while I was at my daughte's home following the birth of her baby, Summer Abigail. One thing about wire is that it is very transportable and easy to work on without taking up a lot of space, especially in someone else's home! I tried some new things with the wire and it gave me a stash to create with when I returned home. I took 16, 18, 20 and 24 g. wire, tools for cutting and wrapping and mandrels to make jumprings. It all fit in a small 8x11x2" box.

BEADED CABOCHON COMPLETE!

It's been a couple of weeks since my seed bead lesson in California with Arline from Beads Etc., and I will admit my memory did not serve me well, but with Arline's help via email and some additional help from my friend, Jeanne, I did complete the project. My initial plan was to make it the focal in one of my
Egyptian coil bracelets and I still like the idea, but wonder if I should do another one and improve my technique first.....I'm not sure I got the edge row right. It's been a wonderful learning experience and I am not so intimidated by working with seed beads in this form as I was before...so, if you're thinking about learning to do this, find yourself a teacher and GO FOR IT!!!

COMPLETED PIECES IN COPPER & ANOTHER SPECIAL ORDER

A while back I posted pics of some wire wrapped pieces I did while enjoying my new granddaughter. Well, they are now completed. I added a patina to them and tumbled them for hardness and sheen.

I also had a special order for a black onyx necklace with elongated onyx beads. I recently found these black onyx beads in a matte finish, which I thought was a nce change from the more typical highly polished onyx I am used to seeing. I finished the piece off with small polished onyx beads and sterling Bali-style beads. The hook and jumprings are wire wrapped in sterling.

While there, we visited a great bead shop called "Pudgy Beads" and Pat picked out some beads for me to create with! Those beads include the ones in the kitty necklace and bracelet. The metal and glass beads were ones I had here at home. Pat loves her kitty cats (all three inside and more outside)! She left the creative part to me, so I hope she is happy with the end results. She also had me make a child's set in pink and I used Czech glass and crystal with extra links added to the pieces for size accommodation. Long Beach was wonderful and my visit with Pat most memorable. Most of my visit however, was with my newest granddaughter, Summer Abigail - it was a glorious two weeks!

p.s. the Kitty Bracelet focal bead is reversible - really cool with the flower design on the other side!

I am enjoying time getting to know my granddaughter, Summer Abigail - a.k.a. Abby! What a beautiful gift, this lovely, warm, charming child. She is such a wonderful addition to our family, now with THREE wonderful grandchildren! We couldn't be luckier. However, I still am enjoying some wirework inbetween bonding with Abby. They are works in progress and once the finishing touches are done, I will repost them! Have a wonderful weekend. Spend time doing something you love with someone you love!

IT'S A GIRL!

My husband and I spent our day anxiously awaiting the news of the birth of our 3rd grandchild. We have a baby girl! Summer Abigail was born at 2:15 Pacific time, weighing in at 9 pounds and 20 1/2" long. She has light brown curly hair, chubby cheeks, and can't wait for her first hug from grandma and grandpa! Mommy, Daddy, and Abby are doing great!

My friend, Melissa gave me an awesome pendant with a redheaded woodpecker. I decided to put it with some "lovely blue jasper" stones I had on hand. I incorporated some red Swarovski crystal, silver moon/star beads and spacer beads, and finished it off with a sterling silver clasp and jump rings. This is the end result! Thank you, Melissa, for this lovely pendant. I hope you like it!

Peace Earrings and more...

I'm trying to catch up on loose ends - like finally putting my peace earrings on earwires!!! I made some copper on brass and some brass on copper. I think my personal preference is the copper on brass. In addition, I had some crystal earrings I made some time ago that have been waiting for me to photograph and tag them for Artfire. I hope to get them onto Artfire tonight or in the morning!

A PRODUCTIVE DAY!

I have been playing with wire and beads since early this morning. Since it has been snowing, snowing, snowing, I decided to just stay in today and see what I could get done. I made another Egyptian coil bracelet and added a lovely turquois bead to it, then made pendants, also using the coil. I plan to hang them from leather cord. I also made several more of my peace discs (pictured a few days earlier) for earrings and made a couple of batches of jump rings. Jeanne came over and I showed her how to make the E. coil bracelet and she tried adding one of her lampwork beads to it - a very nice touch! She's going to finish it up at home - I can't wait to see the finished product. So, it's been a very busy day. I'm calling it a night! Until tomorrow. Sweet Dreams!

PMC - 1ST ATTEMPT

My friend Jeanne and I had our first experience on our own with precious metal clay in silver. We recently purchased a kiln together and put it to work with our creations, even making our own molds to work with, along with some purchased molds. My sun faces came out pretty well, one better than the other as far as details, but overall, once cleaned up, patina added, and some elbow grease, this was the final result. The little face was created because we're expecting our third grandchild in March and I wanted a baby face to reflect "Baby G" as he or she is lovingly referred to. I'm not sure this looks like a baby though! What do you think? :) The face looks sweet against a brass disc.

PEACE SIGN JEWELRY

I've been working on some peace sign jewelry. A while back I had made a pair of earrings and wanted to continue experimenting with wire to create pendants and also more stamped disc designs. This is the result of those attempts. I personally like a rather "rough" look to some designs, and this is one of those times. I am still a novice in my soldering skills, but I think it works okay with these pieces.

The discs are soldered copper on brass with the peace sign on the copper. I added patina to bring out the design and I think I will make earrings with these pieces.

Ahhhh...success at last - I have my new name (JEWELRY EXPRESSIONS BY ANITA) and my Artfire site is in place. (For anyone new to this blog, it was previously named BeaDazzled by Anita, as was my Artfire site.)

I have listed some of my jewelry on Artfire today and will continue that process over the next few days. I do not have my Facebook page back up as I am awaiting a response from the Facebook team to see if they can get my page back up so I can rename it, or if I have to create a new page. It would be nice if I could get my old page back, but what will be, will be.

Thanks to those of you who helped me out with picking a new name. You gave me a lot to think about before choosing Jewelry Expressions by Anita. I will be in touch with you via e-mail in the next day or so to thank you personally.

I want to thank everyone who e-mailed me or commented on the blog regarding a new name for my jewelry business. It has been a struggle coming up with a name that would work, but the new name will be(drum roll please): Jewelry Expressions by Anita.

I hope to have my Artfire store and Facebook page back up and running over the next few days. Once that is complete, I will contact those of you who participated in helping me with suggestions for a new name. I appreciated all the feedback - it was extremely helpful in sorting out what would or would not work.

I don't know about you, but I thought the opening was spectacular. The visuals were beautiful and the music was outstanding - I loved it all - and K.D. Lang could not have poured more soul into Alleluia - I could watch that performance over and over. It took my breath away. And Nellie Furtado and Bryan Adams - wow - what a way to get everyone pumped up for the games!!!!!!!! I just wanted to dance and sing along. Then there was Thomas - gliding through the air like an angel. HATS OFF TO CANADA!

Egyptian Coil Bracelet

I took on a new wire project this week - an EGYPTIAN COIL BRACELET. I downloaded the free tutorial from http://mckjewelry.blogspot.com/2006/08/egyption-coil-tutorial.html. So my thanks to Marie Cristine! I had fun making this bracelet, starting out using inexpensive 19 gauge stainless steel wire that I picked up at a local hardware store. Having never worked with stainless steel wire, it was harder to work with than copper as it stiffens up as you work with it. But the end result was worth the effort. After making my first piece, I moved on to 18 gauge copper wire with the results pictured. I am very pleased with this piece and my advise if you decide to make this bracelet is to keep each wire length the same, check each piece after coiling to see that each piece is still the same length. Be consistent in each step you do so that the final piece comes out well balanced. I really thought the bracelet was beautiful in its natural copper coloring, but decided to patina it and absolutely love the antiqued look from this process. INSPIRATION!!!

I decided to do some "beading" rather than wire, and guess what? I went right back to wire....I guess it's becoming a part of me. This was a really fun project for me. Creating the wire pieces, putting them together, and incorporating the beads - it fulfilled the creative need in me. I love the way it came out and especially how the colors work together. My mind is already working towards a next project - I seem to create as I wake in the morning...that's when the creative juices seem to flow! There is so much beautiful bead and wire work out there in cyberspace and in magazines, that you have a lot of ideas to work with to create your own unique piece of jewelry. I read of one designer who gets ideas as she drives down the road - like the way a truckload of logs is stacked in a truck - so I am trying to learn to keep my eyes open to everything around me - colors, textures, or the way something twists or bends. You never know what might inspire that next piece of jewelry! Until then....Have a great day! Anita

Rolling Mills for Metal and Wire Workers

I read a great article today by Melissa Muir: "Tool Time Tuesday - Rolling Mill Textures."

The article has great photos, by Valerie Heck, showing the different textures you can achieve using the rolling mill, as well as information on how to use and care for the mill. I would love to have one, but perhaps a smaller, more affordable one for my needs.

It also happens I recently read an article about a small pattern mill that is offered by Dave Arens of Gemstones Etc in Tucson, AZ. To quote the information he sent me:
"A mill for applying patterns up to 3 gauge wire or strips 3/8" by .229 thick of non ferrous metal. The nine patterns can be applied to 1 or 2 sides of the wire. The optional pattern rolls are changeable by the user. There are three sets of pattern rolls, a straight line 90 degrees to the length of the wire, a straight line 30 degrees to the left, a straight line 30 degrees to the right. The spacing is 12, 20, and 40 lines per inch. The mill comes with 1, 90 degree 12 lines per inch pattern roll."

I promised an update this week of my current projects and this is it! I have incorporated hammering, wire wrapping, stringing, and using a dapping block into these items. I don't have them posted to Artfire yet, but hope to soon. Please post a comment and let me know what you think of my newest creations! The glass beads were made by my friend, Jeanne (AKA gammiebrat) and I love the color of the beads with the copper. Thanks, Jeanne! This is my first post for 2010 and with it comes the hope for a better future for our country, our state, and our local community. And I should add, for the world, most especially Haiti, right now, during its time of great need. Find a way to give through your church, the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or any other organization that you support that can reach out to the people of Haiti.

Keep in your prayers, our leaders, our military, and our mission to stop terrorism in the world. Pray for our children and teach them well, so they can lead our country with integrity when their time comes, preserving the freedoms we value so highly.

New Items for the Craft Show

It's been a while since I posted. I've been busy babysitting and making some new jewelry for my upcoming craft shows at Yankee Lake and in Hartford. The show at Yankee Lake, in the Ballroom, Brookfield, OH, is on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10am to 5pm. The show in Hartford, OH is on Nov. 21 from 10am to 5pm. I don't have all the details for the Hartford show (like location!), so will update this post when I have the info. I've made some new items in copper, completely hand made, hammered, patinated, and have also made a few items for the younger girls in cats eye and lampwork beads. The necklaces are around 14" in length, but adjustable. Bracelets around 5 1/2" with some adjustability. I will have all of the items listed on Artfire, as well as these items at the show. I have been working on some football team color jewelry and I'd love your feedback. It's been fun...starting with my friend, Judy, who wanted yellow and black jewelry, unbeknownst to me, because she is a Steeler's fan...and thus, an idea was born. With the help of my friend, Jeanne, who has recently started making lampwork beads, I have come up with some items that are Browns and Steelers colors for those hard core football fans. Now, my daughter said, "What about Ohio State fans?" So, I told her I'd come up with something for her, since that's her alma mater. What about it, Jeanne?! Some beads in Gray and Scarlet? I think there's some black and white in there, too!

A RESPIT WITH A FRIEND

My friend, Jeanne, and I had a few days away and it was just wonderful. We relaxed, we wired some beads, we did the casino (no, no big winners), we ate, we hunted beach glass, and we shopped. It was a lovely, peaceful, relaxing three days, but now it's back to the usual. Next week I start watching my grandchildren - they are a blessing.

Oh, yes, we may have a new beader/wire worker in our midst - our new friend and fellow camper, Judy, is interested in learning wire wrapping and beading and I think she's going to love it! We had some fun sharing reading materials and showing her Jeanne's beads and some of our wire work.

Sunday, Jeanne and I are going to an open house in Youngstown to learn create a precious metal clay pendant or earrings. There will also be a potter there. If you are from Youngstown and interested, here is the information:
